National Personal Trainer Awareness Month

What do you think makes a great personal trainer?

That’s easy! Putting the client first & being selfless = ego checked at the door, establishing a we & us mentality because as a teammate & team leader you always want to be present with your presence at all times. It’s all about the client’s needs and you assisting them in their fitness journey.

Which is more important to you: physical fitness or nutrition?

I truly think they go hand in hand and walk lock step together! If you don’t have an intake of nutritious quality food you will never have the energy to put forth towards valuing your fitness without a winning food plan = zero drive.

What would you say is the most important thing to keep in mind about fitness and aging?

There are so many components but being consistent and having a dedicated workout routine of minimally 5-6 days a week with an easy day of walking or chores on that off day is really important as you age.

What is the most important body part to work out for people 40 and older?

If I could pick just one it would be legs. They are a conduit to the heart and lungs. It’s very important to squat with weights because it’s great for fighting osteoporosis and adding bone density. Walking and hiking are also amazing and very easy to incorporate.

How would you structure a new client's workout plan?

We always start with a Par-Q form (a participant questionnaire) that asks all the pertinent information necessary in order to ensure we’re clear about what physical limitations you may have or not. Then we’ll start a conversation about your needs and goals. After we’ve had that discussion, we would start to structure and develop a routine that you could incorporate and eventually make into a lifestyle change.

You’re not just a trainer, you’re a life coach and a healer! How do you keep clients motivated?

I’m a fitness professional, and I have been blessed with the opportunity to work in an industry where I can be inspiration to all my clients given that I always bring a quality product to the table via continuing education and implementation of new training protocols. That’s one of the hallmarks of my business. It’s not just about the outward physical appearance, it’s the internal and physiological psychological glow that outweighs anything you can think of when you realize having fitness in your life is paramount to happiness and you can easily tap into it on a daily basis if you’re interested in being healthy inside and outside for the long haul. Cliches everywhere, but this one is true —it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.
